Winnipeg

Wednesday, July 23, 2008
We didn't have a map of Winnipeg but we managed...the tom tom that we had bought we were still trying to figure out. The plan for the day was to go to Assinoboine Zoo, The Royal Mint and the legislative buildings and then hang out at The Forks. Owen really wanted to eat at a restaurant that served authentic Ukrainian food that a friend had recommended.

At the zoo we saw tigers, monkeys and the kids even got to feed the animals. Did you know that Reindeer make clicking sounds when they travel? There were camels and polar bears...if anyone is in Winnipeg, the kids highly recommend a visit.

The next place we went was the mint. Did you know that they make currency for 100 other countries? They wouldn't let us take any pictures of the process...a gold bar weighs 28 pounds and cost about $450,000.00 to buy. They had a currency coin that you could buy for $8.000.00 but was a $500 dollar coin.

These legislative buildings had huge bronzed Bison in the main foyer. They moved them on big blocks of ice so they wouldn't scrap the marble floor. A lot of greek mythology was used in the building. There are even fossils in the walls and floors from the local limestone they used.

The Forks are where the two rivers meet, it reminded me of Graville Island. We walked around and played till it started to rain.

Alycia's was a restaurant that was recommended by a friend. We had perogies, cabbage rolls, potatoe pancakes and different soups. It was a small family restaurant that closed at 8:00. We all enjoyed the food.

Because of the pouring rain we decided to fill up the tank and head out and see how far we got. We made it to Ontario and stopped just outside Kenora and pulled over to sleep. It was close to midnight. Tomorrow we'll have a long trek to Thunder Bay.

We hope all is well at home. We are starting to feel like we are a far way from home.

I was checking your blog to see if you had updated since you left, but had mistakenly bookmarked a particular 'date' for your blog and didn't see all the updates you've been doing. You guys are making great time traveling, but it also sounds like you're having fun visiting friends and places. Miss you guys! So far your house is still standing... LOL... though I did steal some oatmeal the other day.

Thanks for the info on the gold bars - just in case I need to trade in gold some day... Did they let you help stack bars?

Sounds like the dinner was good!
